Sesame Street: Elmo's Morning Routine

Daily morning routine에 대해 말하는 Elmo, 이걸 보니까 방학 때마다 방학 계획표 그리던 기억이 나네. 
엘모가 말하는 아침 루틴은 간단하고, 쉬운 표현들이라 잘 들린다. 하지만 한글 표현을 보고 바로 영어로 말하려고 하면 약간의 버퍼링이 있어서 슬프다. 그래도 따라하다보면 저런 표현들을 자연스럽게 쓸 수 있겠지. 

오늘의 엘모의 이야기 중 '옷을 입다'라는 표현으로 "Get dressed" 를 확실히 정리해보았다.
일상적으로 옷을 입다라는 표현은 "get dressed", 하지만 옷을 격식에 맞춰 입거나, 멋을 내서 잘 차려입거나, 의상으로 변장하거나 할 때 사용하는 표현은 "dress up"이라고 한다. 이번 기회에 확실히 정리 : )

Oh, good morning everybody.
오, 모두들 좋은 아침이야.

Oh, Elmo's in the middle of his morning routine, yeah. 
엘모는 아침 일과를 하고 있어. 

Even though things may be a little different right now, Elmo's mommy and daddy say keeping a daily routine is very important.
비록 지금은 상황이 조금 다르지만, 엘모의 엄마 아빠는 매일 하는 하루 일과를 지키는 것이 매우 중요하다고 하셔. 

Here's Elmo's morning routine.
엘모의 아침 일상은 이래. 

Elmo made it himself. 
이건 엘모가 직접 만들었어. 

Looks pretty nice, huh?
꽤 멋져 보이지? 

First, Elmo got dressed which is pretty easy sine Elmo doesn't wear any clothes. 
우선, 꽤 편하게 입었어, 왜냐면 엘모는 옷을 안 입잖아. 

Then Elmo brushed his fur, see. 
그리고 엘보는 털을 빗었어, 봐. 

Then Elmo had breakfast. 
그리고 엘모는 아침을 먹었어. 

Oatmeal with babana slices, yummy!
바나나 덩어리가 들어간 오트밀, 맛있어! 

Elmo helped to set the table too. 
엘모도 식탁 차리는 걸 도왔어. 

And then Elmo brushed his teeth. 
그리고나서 엘모는 이를 닦았지. 

And then it's time to play and learn. 
그리고 이제 놀면서 배울 시간이야. 

But before we start our day we have to stretch and wiggle.
하지만 우리 시작하기 전에, 기지개를 켜고 몸을 흔들어야 되. 

Come on everybody, let's stretch together. 
자, 모두 다 함께 기지개를 켜보자.

Oh, that feels good. 
오, 기분 좋다.

[영어표현 공부]

1. Oh, Elmo's in the middle of his morning routine, yeah. 
엘모는 아침 일과를 하고 있어. 

* (동사) in the middle of (sth/-ing) : ~ 하는 중에 / ~ 중간에

Can we talk later? I'm in the middle of something.
나 지금 뭐 하는 중인데, 나중에 얘기해도 될까?

I'm in the middle of writing a letter.
나 편지 쓰고 있는 중이야. 

We were in the middle of dinner. 
우리는 식사 중이었어.

2. Elmo got dressed 
엘모는 옷을 입었다

* got dressed : 옷을 입다  ( = to put your clothes on)

Go and get dressed!
가서 옷 입어. 

It took me five minutes to get dressed. 
옷 입는데 5분 걸렸어. 

In the morning, I got dressed after I brush my teeth. 
아침에, 나는 이를 닦은 후에 옷을 입었다. 

 ** "Get dressed"와 "Dress up"의 차이점
Get dressed > to put on clothes (in general)
Get dress는 일상적인 상황에서 옷을 입을 때 사용한다.

Dress up > dress formally or to put on a costume. 
Dress up 은 보통때보다 더 옷을 격식에 맞춰 차려입고 멋을 낸 것, 혹은 의상으로 변장했을 때 사용한다. 

"Dress up" 이 사용되는 예문

It's your birthday! You should dress up! (생일날이니 멋지게 차려입어!)
Do you dress up for Halloween? (할로윈을 위해 변장하니?)
There's a dress code. You have to dress up. (복장 규정이 있어서 그에 따라 갖춰 입어야돼)
What made you dress up so nicely? (웬일로 멋을 부렸어요?)

 

 

3. But before we start our day we have to stretch and wiggle.
하지만 우리 시작하기 전에, 기지개를 켜고 몸을 흔들어야 되.

* wiggle : (좌우 상하로 짧게) 씰룩씰룩 움직이다, 꼼지락거리다, 꿈틀하다
(= to move with small movements from side to side or up and down, or to make something move like this)

I wiggled my toes.
나는 발가락을 꼼지락 거렸다. 

Can you wiggle your ears?
너 귀를 움직일 수 있니?
